If you want crisp, exceptional sound quality, you can’t stop once you’ve found the right speakers. You have to make sure every element of your car audio system is on point. This includes your car amplifier.

Though you can’t see this often-misunderstood piece of equipment, it’s essential for ensuring you get to listen to your favorite songs, podcasts, and more. Below, we’ll answer some of the most frequently asked questions about car amplifiers: what they do, what kind you may be interested in getting, and more.

What Does a Car Amp Do?

Your car’s sound doesn’t start with the car stereo. Instead, it starts when your amplifier receives a signal. This signal isn’t strong enough for you to hear, so the amplifier has to amplify the signal before you can hear it properly.

Because it’s necessary for hearing audio, there’s a very high chance that your head unit will already have one. But when you’re driving, the speaker may not be able to handle higher volume. In that case, you’re going to need a high power amplifier.

Powerful amps also let you raise the volume level without distorting the sound quality. The amplifier built in your speaker may not be strong enough to reach a satisfying volume for you. This is especially true if you choose to add a subwoofer or upgrade your speaker.

What Kind of Amplifier Should I Get?

There are a few different rules you should follow when determining what amp to get. The first thing you’ll want to note is the RMS power: the maximum power rating for your amplifier should not exceed the maximum power rating for your speaker.

You’ll also want to make sure you get the right channel amplifier. There are several kinds of channel amps: anywhere from one to six channels are available. You want to have a channel for each speaker or subwoofer. So, if you just want the sound to come out of your front speakers, you’ll need a 2-channel amp. If you also want amps for your back speakers, you’ll need a 4-channel amp.

If you’re adding a subwoofer, you may be interested in one of the odd-numbered channel amps: 3- or 5-amp.
